The first major museum retrospective of Enrique Chagoya's mixed-media work revels in thorny cultural hierarchies and identity politics. Chagoya immigrated to California from Mexico City in the late '70s, after completing coursework in the political sciences. He enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute within a few years, where he began laying the groundwork for his canvases and prints, which hybridize contrasting icons to achieve a dense, cross-cultural weave. He's now an active member of the local arts community, and has worked as a director at Galería de la Raza, San Francisco's premier venue for Chicano/Latino arts and culture.
