Music: Rock/Pop Was (Not Was)

David Weiss and Don Fagenson (aka David and Don Was) emerged in the '80s on New York's downtown Ze label, alongside such disco acts as Kid Creole and the Coconuts and Konk. With a little help from such friends and session musicians as "Sweet Pea" Atkinson and former MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, they blended rock, disco, and Beat poetics into funky, off-kilter dance music. Laced with absurdist humor that sent up Reagan-era paranoia, Was (Not Was)'s music was danceable, brainy, and more than a little nutty. Thirty years down the line, the brothers Was still haven't lost their groove, or their outspokenness.
