Whether hip-hop or free verse, all forms of spur-of-the-moment poetics and verbal sparring are welcomed at this event benefiting POOR magazine, a publication dedicated to the issues surrounding low- and no-income citizens. Champion of many prior poetry slams Devorah Major opens the evening and welcomes fresh contenders, along with seasoned heavyweights, to the ring. Refereed by San Francisco poet laureate Jack Hirschman — who has more than 50 collections of essays and poetry to his name — the event is open to any participant willing to pay the entry fee.
