In just two albums, the Kills' VV and Hotel have established themselves as the Bonnie and Clyde of the avant-indie scene. Their blues-based garage-punk tunes set a new bar for sexual tension — apropos for a group that declares, "You're gonna have to step over my dead body / Before you walk out that door." The band's Jack and Meg White-esque dynamic has earned it comparisons to the White Stripes, but that assessment discounts the Kills' sexier, darker sound. Subtle, with simple drum-machine beats, ominous vocals, and jagged riffs, their minimalist tunes revel in the atmospheric melodrama of broody artists like PJ Harvey, while simultaneously smoothing the black-obsessed edges of Suicide.
