Von Iva frontwoman Jillian Iva combines Joan Jett's punk-rock attitude with Tina Turner's impressive vocal cords, providing an oversupply of vampy oomph that gives the Gossip's Beth Ditto a run for her money. Von Iva's sophomore album, Our Own Island, is full of swaggering, pulsating synths and crunchy dance-party beats — the perfect accompaniment to Iva's spiked heels, onstage strut, and (most impressively) drum-set climbing. Carletta Sue Kay's piano-driven sets, channeling Elton John and cabaret showtunes, are decidedly more sedate, but still drenched in sass and naughtiness.
