Haines Gallery says…

Coveted by Chinese intellectuals and nobles, scholar's rocks could once be found everywhere from university courtyards to private gardens. They existed as a minature example of natural beauty created over vast expanses of time. Contemporary, Beijing-based sculptor Zhan Wang recasts this ancient symbol, reflecting the ambivalences of China's recent capitalist growth spurt by meticulously covering the rocks in thin sheets of stainless steel. While the metallic covering suggests protective armor against further erosion, Wang's rocks also bring to mind discarded wads of tin foil on the scale of a Claus Oldenburg sculpture.
