Singer/songwriter Basia Bulat may look young and earnest on the cover of her Rough Trade debut, Oh My Darling, but don't let cuteness confuse you: there's a hearty vigor boiling below. Bulat surrounds her earthy, Jolie Holland-esque trill with marching-band dynamics to match fellow Canadian wonder-rockers like Arcade Fire and the New Pornographers. Quieter tunes such as "Little Waltz," meanwhile, possess an easygoing tenderness. In a few moments of blue-eyed schmaltz, Bulat's record may seem overly eager to please, but live, she's got enough sparkle to bring it all off with genuine passion.
