Parsing the multivalent impacts of the prison system on American society, Criminal: Art and Criminal Justice in America unites disparate artistic practices into a coherent, powerful investigation. Rigo 23 curates objects crafted by people behind bars, while Julie Green and William Pope.L employ foodstuffs as moving metaphors for selfhood, fantasy, and disposability. Kota Ezawa's trademark animations provide further insight into the media's often parasitic relationship with the criminal-justice system, and Alex Donis and Sandow Birk's contributions recast heroic figures and fantastical plots within the context of contemporary urban California. Professor Angela Y. Davis is the keynote speaker at a free, related symposium, Prison/Culture: Art, Ideas and Dialogue, on Saturday March 1.
