Film A Boy and His Dog (1975)

L.Q. Jones' low-budget cult classic A Boy and His Dog takes Harlan Ellison's short story about a post-apocalyptic America and retells it in the spirit of a Robert Crumb comic. For Vic (played by a very young Don Johnson), forcing himself on women is as much a priority as scavenging for food — neither of which he can do without the assistance of his intellectually superior, wise-cracking mutt Blood (voiced to caustic perfection by Tim McIntire), who communicates telepathically with his human "companion." While the film's casual chauvinism can be groan-worthy, its cross-species twist on the buddy film shifts our sympathies to Blood, who frequently critiques Vic's appetite-driven existence with delicious derision.
