Elliott Smith's threadbare songs, personal melancholy, and early death cast a long shadow over his photographic record. In drizzly Portland portraits and long-faced close-ups, the singer-songwriter often seems at a ghostly remove, readying to become indie-rock's first certifiable saint. Noted LA photographer Autumn de Wilde worked with Smith over several sessions (including one that resulted in the swirly cover shot of his album Figure 8). Noise Pop exhibits a wide selection of her portraits, many of which capture a more offhanded, playful side of Smith than we usually see. De Wilde, who has also photographed Pavement, Beck, and Karen O, brings an especially sensitive eye for personalities to her rock profiles.
