Alexandra Juhasz and Jesse Lerner: F is for Phony

With its titular nod to Orson Welles' unreliable documentary on forgery, F for Fake (1974), Alexandra Juhasz and Jesse Lerner's book F is for Phony examines the modern pre-history of the mockumentary: films which don't simply deconstruct reality but posit new realities altogether, or flagrantly traffic in half-truths. Some of the works they discuss tonight include sterling specimens of yellow journalism (Spanish-American War newsreels) and parodic ethnography (Luis Buñuel's Land Without Bread). Other topics range from Mitchell Block's controversial No Lies — in which a rape victim recounts her ordeal to an increasingly hostile cameraman — to Shulie, Elisabeth Subrin's "found" portrait of feminist Shulamith Firestone as a young firebrand.
