Art Emory Douglas: The Long Memory: Works Past and Present

When Gil Scott-Heron proclaimed that "the revolution will not be televised," he could just as well have been referring to Emory Douglas' incendiary graphic-design work for The Black Panther newspaper. Combining bold, mixed-media collages with pencil drawings, Douglas' art clearly communicated, in visual terms, the Panthers' anger over disenfranchised African Americans' impoverished living conditions while portraying his subjects with the dignity so often denied them by the (white) mainstream media. This exhibit brings together Douglas' classic material with recent posters protesting the SF8 case, in which, according to activists, eight former Black Panthers were wrongfully arrested.
