Through haunting, polychromatic compositions, the late Jeremy Blake's digital-video works sought to unify the realms of painting and film. When Blake rose to fame nearly a decade ago, such synaesthetic attempts were nearly a century old (albeit tackled with different technology), but his pieces surpassed the work of his Symbolist forebears with cunning use of historical narratives and media-pervaded pop imagery. Blake's Winchester Redux is a distillation of his Winchester Trilogy, which casts Sarah Winchester's eccentric San Jose mansion as the centerpiece for a kaleidoscopic commentary on the architecture of American memory and identity.
