Film The Time We Killed (2004)

Jennifer Reeves' brave 2004 feature journeys deep into the consciousness of an agoraphobic poet who's locked herself inside her New York apartment during the buildup to the Iraq War. "Terrorism brought me out of the house, but the war on terror drove me back in," Robyn (Lisa Jarnot) deadpans in an associational voiceover. Reeves' complete identification with the character (she even served as Jarnot's body-double during shooting) makes The Time We Killed an immersive work, with unexpected comic notes and lyrical visualizations leavening its near-narcoleptic atmosphere of depression. The film's integration of experimental technique into a narrative frame feels almost intuitive, offering a nice counterpoint to the showier gambits of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
