Film Black Lizard (1968)

The crown jewel at the center of Black Lizard — Kinji Fukasaku's deliriously campy screen adaptation of Rampo Edogawa's 1920s gem-heist novella — is undoubtedly its star, Akihiro Miwa. In her time, Miwa was a legendary drag queen, nightclub hostess, and leader of her own avant-garde theatre company, all long before she became a movie actress. As Black Lizard's titular jewel thief, Miwa vamps it up big time, but her Lizard isn't just after bling — she also collects and freezes specimens of human beauty. So when a jeweler's gorgeous daughter is kidnapped, Detective Akechi is soon on the Lizard's tail.
