Film Mothra (1961) and Battle in Outer Space (1959)

When they unleashed Godzilla in 1954, director Ishirô Honda and visual-effects guru Eiji Tsuburaya forever changed the way cinema imagined disaster. Their atomic-age kaiju eiga (monster movies) form a veritable bestiary populated by Gamera, Ghidorah, Rodan, and, of course, Mothra. If watching the giant lepidopteran trash Tokyo's Shibuya district doesn't bring an impish smile to your face, then surely the charming songs of Mothra's miniature fairy priestesses (played by pop-duo twins the Peanuts) will. Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters author August Ragone is on hand for the screenings to discuss the effects master's career.
