Art Propogations

Paul Hayes' folded-paper-and-wire sculpture Cultivated Momentum hangs from Johansson Projects' ceiling like a recycled-kelp forest, its black squiggles calling fish to mind. Hayes' organic, abstract shapes fit well alongside the other warped ecosystems on display. Kiersten Essenpreis transplants Henry Darger's Vivian Girls into snowy woods with bison, giant fish, and elephants, while Tadashi Moriyama's paintings depict urban sprawl with a giddy abstraction that evokes Yayoi Kusama's compulsive repetition. Each piece, in its own way, sets mutation against entropy, with bets on which will win.
