In 2004, Queens College professor Eugenia Paulicelli complicated this picture with her fascinating history of the profitable industry's roots in Mussolini's fascist state. Fashion Under Fascism: Beyond the Black Shirt is, if nothing else, a powerful demonstration of the politics of style.
