Film Exiled (2006)

While Hong Kong action films seem like a dime a dozen these days, the best ones still have the power to drop your jaw. Johnnie To remains one of the genre's biggest names: his impeccably stylish films put a new spin on an old genre. In Exiled, a familiar storyline — a former assassin starts a new life, but an old enemy sends his agents out to kill him — gets the To treatment with stunningly choreographed fight sequences and slick cinematography. Set in Macau before its handover to China, the film evokes the lawnessness of the Wild West, making it a worthy addition to SFMOMA's Non-Western Westerns film series.
