If you couldn't get tickets to Stephen Malkmus' sold-out Great American Music Hall show a few months back, arrive early for tonight's set and catch him in his native habitat (a record store). Malkmus' former band Pavement qualify as one of indie rock's essential groups, with legions of followers treating his twisty guitar lines and deadpan vocal phrasing as holy writ. It's taken the singer some time to get comfortable with his post-Pavement elder-statesman status, but on the I'm Not There soundtrack and upcoming Real Emotional Trash, he finally sounds at home among shaggy anthems and melancholic reveries.
