SFMOMA says…

John Lennon was so impressed with Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky's psychedelic western El Topo that he convinced a friend to buy out the film's distribution rights and funded the director's next film himself. El Topo tracks a nomadic gunslinger (played by Jodorowsky himself) who encounters a series of mystical fighters in the desert. Its mix of outlandish sex and violence, grotesque surrealism, and pseudo-spiritualism made it one of the first midnight-movie hits. An obvious influence on oddballs like David Lynch, El Topo remains a touchstone of counterculture cinema.
