Music: Classical Orchestral Innovators: Travis Sullivan's Björkestra and the Realistic Orchestra

The songs of Icelandic chanteuse Björk, with their complex layers and tonalities, are great candidates for jazz interpretation. Alto saxophonist Travis Sullivan takes the task seriously, arranging them for an 18-piece jazz orchestra — horns, brass, and all. Vocalist Becca Stevens nicely complements the band, fusing the jazz timbres of her voice with Björk's unique cadence and elocution. Like the Björkestra, SF locals Realistic Orchestra put a new twist on some old favorites: they employ an electric bass and a DJ to give the big-band treatment to rockers like Van Halen.
