German filmmaker Heinz Emigholz casts his cinematic eye on the wonders of visionary architecture. Each of his documentaries shown tonight profiles a single architect, but instead of the usual talking heads, we get deliberately paced "archives" of the spaces themselves. In tracing the contours of structures built by Bruce Goff, Rudolph Schindler, and Louis Sullivan, Emigholz demonstrates the dynamic ways that great architects put light and angle to use — and reveals a deep affinity between architecture and film itself. It's a rare chance to see these films, and Berkeley audiences get the added bonus of an early look at Emigholz's latest tribute, Loos Ornamental, on April 17.
