Film Something Wild (1986)

It's refreshing to see Something Wild share a bill with David Lynch's Blue Velvet. Both films were celebrated for their subversions of Americana when they came out in 1986, but Blue Velvet's enduring rep-house success has eluded Jonathan Demme's dark screwball comedy. Melanie Griffith stars as Lulu, a sparky deviant who kidnaps a yuppie (Jeff Daniels, never better) and takes him on a whirlwind journey. Vincent Gallo trod similar terrain with his cult hit, Buffalo '66 (1998), though Something Wild does more to reinvigorate its inherited road-movie clichés. Easy riders aside, it's Demme's deft handling of clashing personality types that makes the film so memorable in its own right.
