Film The Man Who Left His Will on Film (1970)

In 1969, Japan was wracked by violent political protest over the country's involvement in the Vietnam War and its signing of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security with the US. Faced with such unrest, director Nagisa Oshima seized upon the turmoil as a backdrop for this circuitous experiment. In The Man Who Left His Will on Film, Motoki, a radical film student, recovers the camera of a friend who committed suicide. Though the footage that he finds is mundane, he's driven to reconstruct his deceased friend's life based on his final reels. The film lets the viewer piece together what is original and what is a reenactment, suggesting that history and identity are impossible to pin down.
