Toubab means "foreigner" in several West African languages — it's a word the North Carolina natives in Toubab Krewe must have gotten used to hearing during their musical immersions in Mali, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast. The band integrates these countries' musical forms into bright, polyrhythmic grooves, and while this type of appropriation will always raise eyebrows, one certainly can't accuse the group of not having done its homework. As it turns out, the sound of the kora (a 21-string African harp) is perfectly at home in a percussive jam-band setting.
