Film A Grin Without a Cat (1977)

Tonight, the PFA presents a rare screening of Chris Marker's three-hour assemblage essay, A Grin Without a Cat. Marker is best known for his photomontage sci-fi work, La Jetée (1962), an anachronistic film that tests the boundaries of documentary and dramatization. Updated and reshaped several times over the years, A Grin Without a Cat is the French artist's evocation of the worldwide unrest of the late '60s and early '70s. Marker's mysterious piece is dizzyingly varied, toying with agitprop and pastiche in an elusive quilt stretching from The Battleship Potemkin to Che Guevara.
