Cellist Erik Friedlander's performance takes place in conjunction with SF MoMA's retrospective of his father's photography, though the younger Friedlander regularly plays at comparable venues in his own right. A veteran of John Zorn's avant-garde ensembles, Friedlander is a flexible player, much in demand with everyone from Laurie Anderson and the Mountain Goats. His most recent solo work, Block Ice & Propane, is an impressionistic concept album based on childhood memories of his family's summer road trips — the same travels that provided so much source material for his father's work.
