A far cry from the "brisk, baby" attitude of most American tea guzzlers, the traditional Japanese culture of tea has more to do with the slow, fragrant unfurling of each steeping leaf. San Francisco's Urasenke Foundation, representing one of the main schools of chanoyu (tea ceremony), quotes 16th-century master Sen Rikyu to highlight the profundity latent in the art: "Tea is nothing more than boiling water, making tea and drinking it." These subtle riches become clear in the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum's chanoyu presentation, complete with lecture, discussion, and practical tutorial.
