Poet Ron Sillman has characterized Rae Armantrout's work as "the vertical anti-lyric." Tight and sinewy in structure, Armantrout's poems are condensed chain reactions in which each line sets off new, radical possibilities and sinister subtexts. They don't mince words, but you still emerge slightly dazed and dizzy from what you think you read. Tonight, Armantrout reads along with C.S. Giscombe, whose compositions offer patient meditations on place. Also reading is Alli Warren, whose verse dissections of language, pop culture, and gender frequently get messy ("these words / fondle each other / agape and slightly pink").
