Film Sholay (1975)

Bollywood is intimidating for the uninitiated — even with an intermission, a three-hour musical melodrama is a lot to handle. But Sholay, the highest-grossing blockbuster in Bollywood history, is a film that every self-respecting cinephile should see. The plot is a classic spaghetti western: petty criminals Jai and Veeru come to the aid of a village terrorized by a villainous bandit (Gabbar Singh) and his posse. A true masala film, Sholay is memorable for its humor and charm, action sequences, song and dance numbers, and its classic tale of good vs evil. If you see one Bollywood film in your life, this should be it.
