More Flavor: Tribute SFIFF: An Evening with Mike Leigh feat. Topsy-Turvy (1999)

Director Mike Leigh is the natural heir to the British kitchen-sink dramatists of the '50s and '60s who explored social issues through the lens of working-class life. But Leigh's films have always been shot through with a strong sense of humor to balance out the hardships his characters endure. From his breakout film Naked (1993) to recent triumphs like Vera Drake (2004), Leigh has never lost sight of the funny, sad moments that make the drama of everyday life so rich. Tonight, he accepts the SFIFF's Founder's Directing Award and hosts a screening of his sprightly 1999 Gilbert and Sullivan portrait, Topsy-Turvy.
