Renowned translator and essayist Daniel Mendelsohn visits the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco to discuss his Sisyphean personal history, The Lost. Mendelsohn is hardly the first to chase after the shadowy specifics of relatives who perished in the Holocaust. But his fluid transitions between concrete history, philosophical inquiry, and asides on the nature of memory and storytelling make The Lost a unique meditation. By the end of the book, we feel intimately bound to the people and places of Mendelsohn's search. One imagines he's received reams of interesting responses since the book was published, and tonight's Q&A is sure to be absorbing.
