Brian Jonestown Massacre tambourine player Joel Gion came off as a bit of a clown in Dig!, the 2004 documentary portrait of the band's slow implosion. Don't believe everything you see at the movies, though — fronting the Dilettantes, Gion reveals himself to be a sure hand with glam and garage rock. The band channels groups like Moby Grape and the New York Dolls on their loose-limbed debut album, 101 Tambourines. Fellow San Franciscans LSD and the Search for God live up to their name with psychedelic rock reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and Spaceman 3.
