Embracing the same kind of provocative ambiguity and loose brushwork found in Luc Tuymans' paintings, New Zealand native Saskia Leek structures her imagery around pastel scenes of suburban homes, quiet wintry landscapes, and understated still lives. In Thick Air Method, she continues to focus her attentions on the overlooked and mundane — but where her previous works displayed a polished touch, her new series has a decidedly savage, almost cubist edge. The shift makes Leek's tableaux more urgent, but every bit as dazzling.
