He's known in France as one of the most talented filmmakers to emerge after the New Wave, but Philippe Garrel remains largely unheard-of in America. A good introduction to his oeuvre is 1991's I Don't Hear the Guitar Anymore, a chatty eulogy for the German singer Nico, with whom Garrel had a decade-long affair. The Virgin's Bed is more enigmatic: it's a psychedelic version of the Jesus story, set against the revolutionary backdrop of 1968. Yerba Buena rounds out the weekend (and extends the Nico tribute) with some of Andy Warhol's raw footage of the Velvet Underground at the Factory.
