The mid-'90s seem imbued with a foregone earnestness, when our so-called lives were filled with the hope of the Internet, a second term with Mr. Clinton, and hit songs by the Wallflowers. Rarely do chips off the most famous blocks triumph in the same arenas as their parents, but Jakob Dylan's band scored hit after hit, quickly outselling many of his father's records. Perhaps he lacked Dad's poetic panache, but Jakob wasn't big on pretense, allowing solid pop-writing skills and those crystal-blue eyes to carry his success. Now, he's touring behind a forthcoming solo album, Seeing Things, released with help from that other '90s classic: Starbucks.
