The Unforeseen

For a treatise on suburban sprawl and its impact on the environment, The Unforeseen is surprisingly soft-spoken. Maybe that's because this kind of material speaks for itself — a fact this documentary has the rare good sense to trust. Featuring interviews with Willie Nelson, Robert Redford, and the late, great Texas Governor Ann Richards, the film charts the career trajectory of real-estate developer Gary Bradley, a good ol' West Texas boy who forever impacted the 4,000 acres of hill country he transformed into subdivisions. Co-executive producer Terrence Malick (whose own directorial efforts make love to American big skies) ensures that the lush land in question is captured with an elegiac melancholy.
