Film: Documentary Joy Division

When Grant Gee's documentary portrait of the iconic Manchester post-punk band Joy Division played at Yerba Buena last January, legions of Ian Curtis fans made it a sellout; now the exemplary film is playing a more comfortable one-week run at the Roxie. A Joy Division doc was inevitable, but Grant Gee and researcher-writer Jon Savage took their time with this one, lucidly reconstructing the band's meteoric rise. A necessary supplement to last year's Ian Curtis biopic Control, Joy Division does an especially sharp job conveying the excitement of the band's shattering sound.
