Film Petulia (1968)

- Still from Petulia (1968)
Petulia may be best remembered for the body blow Pauline Kael delivered to it in her famous 1969 essay "Trash, art, and the movies." Forty years later, however, the San Francisco-set film has aged considerably better than Kael might have expected. English director Richard Lester — a New Wave-inspired formalist who first made waves with A Hard Day's Night (1964) — catches '60s counterculture's alluring magnetism and its damaging fallout. Julie Christie calibrates her performance as a carefree extrovert to devastating effect, and cinematographer Nicholas Roeg glosses it all with a fractured glamour that anticipates his own work as a director.
