Reading Willy Vlautin and Paul Brainard: Northline

Film and music have a long history together. Rarely, though, do musicians score books, as Willy Vlautin has done for his latest novel, Northline. Vlautin is the singer and guitarist for Portland alt-country band Richmond Fontaine. His first book, The Motel Life, received critical praise for its rich exploration of the American West and its postmodern version of rugged individualism (he covers much of the same territory in his music). He has a flair for storytelling that's compared to Raymond Carver and Charles Bukowski. Tonight, Vlautin and his pedal-steel partner-in-crime, Paul Brainard, read from Northline and play songs from its soundtrack.
