Film Mister Lonely

Harmony Korine's much-anticipated directorial return finds the former enfant terrible trying a little tenderness. Korine has always been fascinated by bands of outsiders, particularly teenage males who live beyond the pale of what most consider healthy adolescence (see the hormone-fueled sadism of Gummo, or Korine's breakout screenplay for Kids). In the loopy Mister Lonely, he focuses on a commune of celebrity impersonators (along with a side of skydiving nuns). Diego Luna brings a Buster Keaton-esque pathos to his Dangerous-era Michael Jackson, but Samantha Morton's turn as Marilyn Monroe is the real attraction. Monroe's double life hits close to home — and portends a tragic ending — for a woman who spends most of her own time pretending to be someone else.
