Film Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922/1968)

YBCA kicks off its weekend-long season of the witch with the 1968 abbreviated version of Benjamin Christensen's 1922 documentary/horror classic. Mixing humor and gore, slideshow-style montages and harrowing dramatizations, Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages examines the possible correlation between the hysteria of turn-of-the-century mental patients and that of the so-called "witches" of the Middle Ages. And it does so with much spine-chilling oomph — possessed nuns, grave robbers, and satanic Sabbath included — plus the added creep-factor of William S. Burroughs' narration.
