It took San Francisco's Last of the Blacksmiths three years to release Young Family Song, the followup to their self-titled debut. Judging by the impressive album, with its Rhodes-padded production and melancholic songwriting, the wait was worth it. They've moved away from their first album's spooky strains of Americana, with singer Nathan Wanta's molasses drawl now riding woody rock arrangements reminiscent of the Band or the National. They celebrate the record's release with help from the Fresh & Onlys, a Roky Erickson-inspired garage-rock project featuring Black Fiction's Tim Cohen.
