Two weeks after Yerba Buena spotlighted a couple of French director Philippe Garrel's older features, SF MoMA revives Regular Lovers, the filmmaker's oblique return to the formative events of 1968. In the leisurely paced film, Garrel answers Bernardo Bertolucci's idyllic The Dreamers (2003) with a more critical view of the era's potent combination of radicalism and romanticism. Gorgeously shot and staged, Regular Lovers gains an extra layer of poignancy with the presence of Garrel's handsome son, Louis, in a leading role.
