Calling the Fiery Furnaces "indie rock" would be like referring to the Civil War as "a wee skirmish," or to Proust as "light reading." To say that this brother/sister duo pens adventures in prog rock is also a massive understatement; the pair's sound inhabits the indefinable, shaded area on a garage/blues/folk/opera/lo-fi/electronica Venn diagram. The Furnaces are purveyors of melodic sounds, esoteric lyrics, strident guitars, futuristic synthesizers, and lingering vocals — there's a place for these avant-garde wunderkinds somewhere between your Laurie Anderson and Herman Melville.
