Little Tree Gallery has now been fortified, thanks to Bay Area artist Lacey Jane Roberts' handwoven barbed-wire fence. Even though every link of Roberts' formidable barricade has been wrapped in shiny, silver yarn, the fence isn't cozy by any means. In fact, the artist's commanding (albeit fuzzy) structure seems all the more impenetrable with its new sweater, and somehow more sinister. Given the current popularity of all things knit, Roberts' medium isn't terribly surprising — however, the installation's unsettling tension between the industrial and the homemade launches a successful conceptual coup, subverting familiar craft processes and symbols.
