Tucker Nichols' willfully simple notes and crude doodles pose more questions than they answer. Banal shop signs ("Arugula Salad Is Here") or unremarkable words ("Dang") suddenly become heavy with import or slyly comic when Nichols writes them, while oddly shaped scraps of construction paper take on cryptic, alien meanings. He's spent the last few months in residency at the de Young, and appears tonight to (hopefully) explain his most recent primal glyphs. The languorous near-Eastern rhythms of Eliyahu Sills & Quadim set an appropriately mysterious mood.
