Film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964)

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is Russian director Sergei Parajanov's eccentric take on the Romeo and Juliet story. Set in a Carpathian village, the film tracks the star-crossed love between Ivan and Marichka — the daughter of Ivan's father's killer. Marichka accidentally drowns, and though Ivan eventually moves on, his lover's presence haunts him relentlessly. The color-happy director saturates his shots with reds and yellows during the forbidden romance, and fades to gloomy earth tones after Marichka's death; the delirious camerawork only augments the feeling of being in a faraway, mysterious land.
