The identity of every modern Jew is in some way built upon the memory of the Holocaust. As the generation of Holocaust survivors fades away, the memory of its horrific tragedy — including the mass-murder of six million Jews — remains in the collective identity of their surviving families. The Memory Thief explores the history of the Holocaust and its related issues of memory, identity, and evil. Spurred by a chance encounter with a survivor, a lonely gentile named Lukas researches the Shoah to increasingly obsessive proportions. Dark and compelling, the film explores the manipulation of memory and the loss of identity as Lukas begins to create a new persona for himself as a survivor.
